Belize
River Lodge.
Belize River
Lodge is Belize's oldest fishing lodge, in continuous operation
since 1961. (Belize River Lodge was formerly known as
Barothy's Caribbean Lodge Ltd. and Caribbean Sports Ltd.)
Belize River Lodge has been operated since
1987 by one of the world's most capable couples - Marguerite
Miles
and Mike Heusner. (Mike is shown in the Lodge's dining room in the picture on
the right.)
Marguerite makes sure anglers wake up to
fresh coffee, are well-fed and housed, and just generally made
welcome and comfortable.
Mike? Well,
Mike loves to fish, talk about fishing, trade stories about
fishing, tell tall tales about fishing. Have a question
about fishing in Belize, Mike most likely knows the answer, and if
he doesn't, he's likely to have come up with the answer before the
end of your stay. (Mike is also a board member of the BETA,
the Belize Eco Tourism Association.)
Anglers and guests are lodged in the very comfortable Mahogany
Lodge on the banks of the Belize Old River, surrounded by tropical
greenery and flowers, a few crocodiles in the River, and even a
few of Belize's remaining mahogany trees.
Fishing is from 23' skiffs outfitted with guest leaning/cast post,
chairs, guide platform and modern outboard engines. Fishing
is usually two anglers to a skiff, with an experienced
professional English speaking guide.
Fishing grounds include the flats, cayes, and reef of the
Caribbean Sea, as well as mangrove channels of the Belize, Sibun
and Manatee Rivers, plus Black Creek and several other creeks and
lagoons in the area.
Game fish include permit (avg. 6-25 lbs), bonefish
(avg. 3-5 lbs), tarpon (6-150 lbs depending on season), snook (8-15 lbs), Cubera Snapper (avg. 25-50 lbs), Jack Crevalle
(avg. 15-40 lbs), Barracuda (avg. 12-40 pounds), and Cubera
Snapper (avg. 20-50 lbs.)
And,
if fishing from a lodge doesn't appeal to you, Marguerite and and
Mike also offer the ultimate Belize fishing expedition on the
Christina, a 58' Hatteras and the Blue Yonder, a 52' Chris Craft.
Fishing is from
comfortable skiffs in areas not otherwise easily accessible to
anglers. (No long runs in the skiff.)
Four persons
maximum and vacation cruises are offered as well as mothership
fishing cruises.
Medium-upper price tier.
