Manatee Lodge is
located at Gales Point in the
Southern Lagoon
on the Belize coast north of Dangriga.
Gales Point
is one of the last "undiscovered" areas of Belize where visitors can
find good lodging and a variety of interesting activities.
Nothing "upscale," but
rooms are large, clean, with comfortable furnishings, screens, fans,
private baths, a good on-premises restaurant, GREAT views of both the
Maya Mountains and the Southern Lagoon, a five-minute boat ride to the
Caribbean, and a two-minute walk into the Creole Village of Gale's
Point. |
Activities.
Best of all, Manatee Lodge offers easy access to the natural attractions
that make Belize such a special place.
For example, the
Southern Lagoon and surrounding land, creeks and rivers, are home
to:
 |
Belize's largest
concentration of manatees |
 |
An ABUNDANCE
of birds,
including white ibis, egrets, herons, ospreys, oropendulas, Great
Frigates and boobies |
 |
Marine life such as
crabs,
lobsters and fish -- LOTS of fish (Manatee Lodge was originally built
as a fishing resort), including tarpon, snook, jacks, snappers,
mullets and sheepshead, AND saltwater fishing for bones, permit,
tarpon, tuna, King Mackerel and Barracuda on the flats and cayes of
the Caribbean, just a short boat ride away from the Lodge via the Bar
River |
 |
Sea turtle nesting
grounds for Loggerheads, Hawksbills and Green Turtles on the beaches
at the mouth of the Bar River |
 |
Ben Loman Cave (dry
cave) |
 |
Jungle flora and fauna
(both at Soldier's Creek and the nearby Cockscomb Basin Wildlife
Sanctuary) |
 |
The
Village of Gales Point, still a traditional Creole fishing village,
and one of the last places in Belize to find Creole drumming |

Transportation. And, as if the
habitat of Gales Point weren't enough, visitors can travel between
Gales Point and Belize City by boat along the Sibun River -- a unique
experience in and of itself! The boat ride takes a couple of
hours, and can be combined with fishing and birding. Pick-up or
drop-off in Belize City is at the Sav-U docks, easily reached by cab
from the Belize International or Belize City Municipal Airports.
(More traditional ground and air transport can also be arranged.)
Gales Point
and Other Belize Locations. Combining
a stay at Gales Point with other Belize locations is an easy matter.
Cayes with lodging facilities such as Southwater,
Tobacco and Coco Plum are close-by, as are
the Southern and Coastal Highways providing easy access to
Dangriga,
Placencia, Hopkins, Punta
Gorda (Toledo District), San
Ignacio and the Cayo District, Belize City,
the Belize International Airport,
San Pedro and Caye
Caulker.
